Eight years ago, my girlfriend slapped my shoulder, looked straight into my eye and said, “Hon these shirts really have to go.” Then she proceeded to collect every loose blousy polo (even the Gucci ones) and dumped them in boxes for donation. Her glare told me argument was futile.
Okay- so over the years, I lost the six pack and downgraded to a one pack. That led me to investing in windy shirts and loose pants. They felt comfy and I felt free in them. But then I realized- did I really feel grand in them?
I looked in the mirror. The last loose shirt draped forlornly on my shoulders. Sad. I looked sad.
After packing the boxes, my girlfriend returned and said,
“Hon, you gotta look the life you work for”
Then it hit me. Here I was- a captain of industries and a mentor to many aspiring entrepreneurs. Frumpy shirts and baggy pants failed to exude the confidence I strove to impart. Loose jeans belied the seven figure income I claimed people could make with the right motivation.
I went out that very day and invested in some bespoke suits, shirts and dress pants. No looking back.
A week later, in form-fitting, albeit non-branded suit, I delivered a talk before the local business club. The audience commented on the sparkle I carried that day. Then everything ignited.
Today I look back to that pivot point and smile at how my attitude, my wagger, the way I thought , and the way I felt took to the stars. I now feel confident and powerful enough to make change happen.
Stop and think about it. Whether you’re gunning for a new career or revamping your social life, always remember this: The first step toward the life you want is to look like the life you want.
Are you at a cross road now? Have life choices left you in a mid-life crisis? It might all boil down to the constraining attitudes and beliefs you have of yourself. Decide to take the leap. It all starts with a bit of wardrobe change. Then it all takes flight from there.
